  Jose de Mesa 

Born in Manila, Philippines in 1946. After finishing his Bachelor's degree in philosophy, he took up basic theological studies in Manila. He afterwards obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Religious Studies (1978), specializing in Systematic Theology from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. Dr. de Mesa has also done post-doctoral studies at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada. He is presently a staff member and a professor of Systematic Theology at the East Asian Pastoral Institute, an international institute for training pastoral agents of the Christian religious tradition in Asia and the Pacific. He is also the chairperson of its Research Department. Dr. de Mesa serves, too, as a visiting professor of Systematic Theology at the Loyola School of Theology, the Asian Social Institute and St. Andrew's Theological Seminary in the Metro-Manila area.

   Kathleen Coyle, S.S.C.

 

a frequent contributor to the EAPR, is an Irish Columban Sister and a faculty member of the East Asian Pastoral Institute, Manila. She also lectures at Maryhill School of Theology and the Institute of Formation and Religious Studies in Manila. A revised edition of her book, Mary in the Christian Tradition: From a Contemporary Perspective was published simultaneously in England and in the United States in 1996. The Asian edition was published in Manila in 1998.

  Bishop Manny Cabajar, CSsR

Born in Bohol during the  war, he joined the Redemptorist novitiate in 1960, was professed in 1961, and was then sent to Ireland to complete his studies in Cluain Mhuire, Galway. He was ordained in 1966. He was sent to Rome for his licentiate studies after which he volunteered to work in Davao as a missioner. From Davao, he was sent to Madrid to do a doctoral mission while at the same time he taught part-time in St. Francis Xavier Seminary. In 1990, with four confreres, he initiated the way of living the Redemptorist Itinerant Mission Community (RIMC), now recognized as an alternative way of living the Redemptorist life in this country. He became Vicar Provincial in 1996, and elected General Consultor of the Congregation from 1997 to 2003. He was installed fourth bishop of the Diocese of Pagadian on September 2, 2004.

  Peter C. Phan,

a native of Vietnam (one of the “boat people”), emigrated as a refugee to the U.S.A. in 1975. He obtained three doctorates, the Doctor of Sacred Theology from the Universitas Pontificia Salesiana, Rome, and the Doctor Philosophy and the Doctor of Divinity from the University of London. He was also awarded the honorary Doctor of Theology from Chicago Theological Union. He began his teaching career in philosophy at the age of eighteen at Don Bosco College, Hong Kong. In the United States, he has taught at the University of Dallas, Texas; at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, where he held the Warren-Blanding Chair of Religion and Culture; at Union Theological Seminary, N.Y.; at Elms College, Chicopee, MA; at St. Norbert College, De Pere, WI, and at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, where he is currently holding the Ignacio Ellacuría Chair of Catholic Social Thought. He is also on the faculty of the East Asian Pastoral Institute, Manila and Liverpool Hope University, England. He is the first non-Anglo to be elected President of Catholic Theological Society of America.

 

 

 

 

  Dr. Manny de Guzman

He is a fulltime faculty member of Systematic Theology at St. Vincent School of Theology, Quezon City, and concurrent director of the schools Office for Theological and Pastoral Services. He teaches also at the Institute for Consecrated Life in Asia, East Asia Pastoral Institute, Loyola School of Theology, and the Institute of Philosophy and Religion of St. Louis University, Baguio City. He has published academic works and continues his research interests on constructing theologies from the margins, such as on the laity and basic ecclesial communities, migration and ecclesiology-christology, sexually violated victim-survivors, and issues in everyday life. He is co-editing a forthcoming book on Christian Tradition and Politics. He is co-founder of Damdaming Katoliko sa Teolohiya or DaKaTeo (Catholic Theological Society of the Philippines).    Angel Calvo, CMF

He is a Claretian missionary born in Spain who has beenworking in the island of Mindanao, southern Philippines, for more than 30years – mainly with Muslim communities.   Thomas Michel, SJ 

Fr. Michel was born in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. , in 1941. After completing studies in philosophy and theology, he was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 1967. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1969. After Arabic and Islamic studies in Egypt and Lebanon, he completed a doctoral dissertation on the thought of the Muslim scholar Ibn Taymiyya and received a Ph.D. in Islamic thought from the University of Chicago in 1978.
In 1981, he was appointed to the Asia Desk of the Vatican Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and in 1988, he became Head of the Office for Islam in the same Vatican department. Since 1994, he has served as Executive Secretary of the Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Peter Geremia, PIME

He is an Italian-American missionary who has worked in the Philippines  since 1967; first in Tondo and then in Mindanao. He has been for more then 25 years the overall pastoral coordinator for the Indigenous People  (I.P.s) Program of the Diocese of Kidapawan. In 1985 Fr. Peter was targeted for assassination by right-wing vigilantes, who instead killed his friend Fr.Tullio Favali. He is currently based in Columbio Valley Parish, helping and organizing the local B'laang I.P.s.

 

  Jeyaraj Rasiah, SJ 

He is a Jesuit from Sri Lanka. For the past 12 years he has been teaching a variety of subjects in Philosophy and Theology at the Seminaries and Universities in Sri Lanka. His graduate degrees include an M.Ph. (Jnana – Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune, India), S.T.L. in Dogmatic Theology (Pontificia Universita Gregoriana, Rome, Italy) and Ph.D. in Philosophy (University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka). His researches include Bhakti literature, quest for Transcendence in the Indian religious traditions, and the use of images in the self understanding of the Church in Lumen Gentium. He has been involved in the formation of religious in Sri Lanka conducting workshops and retreats and functioned as the Province Coordinator of Formation of the Jesuits. He teaches at EAPI and Loyola School of Theology.

                     Rolando A. Tuazon

He is a member of the Congregation of the Mission (Philippine Province). He teaches fundamental and applied courses in Moral Theology and Ethics at St. Vincent School of Theology where he also serves as Director of Research. He earned both his licentiate and doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium in 2001 and 2006, respectively. His specialization is in the area of narrative and liberation ethics and theology; but he has also published articles and delivered lectures on ethical issues related to human rights, food security and technology, and Catholic Social Thought. He has been involved in the ministry of seminary formation for some years, presently assigned as Director of Formation of the De Paul House and as head of the CM Provincial Commission on Initial Formation. He finds interest also in the work of lay empowerment, helping design formation programs appropriate for lay people. He has been active in the organization of the Adamson University Center for Advocates in Social Ethics (AdU-CASE) and has served as Chair of the Ethics Committee of the South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium of colleges and universities.      Daniel Franklin Pilario

He is a member of the Congregation of the Mission and the present Dean of the Saint Vincent School of Theology (Quezon City).  He received his licentiate (STL) and doctorate in theology (PhD/STD) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) in 2002.  He is also a Professorial Lecturer in sociology at the University of the Philippines (Diliman) and guest professor in Seminario Mayor de San Carlos (Cebu City), St. Louis University (Baguio City) and Maryhill School of Theology (Quezon City). His most recent book, Back to the Rough Grounds of Praxis (2005), deals with the present debates on theological method as it engages with contemporary philosophical and sociological theories. His field or research covers fundamental theology, cultures and inculturation, theologies of migration, theological anthropology, theological method and sociological theory. Agnes A.  Brazal

She is full-time professor at the Maryhill School of Theology teaching moral and systematic theology subjects.  She published various articles in local and international journals/collection of essays and edited the anthologies Faith on the Move: Toward a Theology of Migration in Asia (2008), Interdisciplinarity in Theology (2007) and Body and Sexuality: Theological-Pastoral Perspectives of Women in Asia (2007). Author of the gender-sensitive and contextualized textbook series for Grades 1-6 Growing Up as Christians in God’s Family (2009). Her research interests include feminist, liberationist, inter-cultural and migration theologies. She was the 2003 winner of the Institute of Missiology, Missio, Aachen -international academic essay contest for Contextual Theology and Philosophy on the theme “Religious Identity and Migration.”
