Mssion Context:  Experience of God

Jose de Mesa: was born in Manila, Philippines in 1946. After finishing his Bachelor's degree in philosophy, he took up basic theological studies in Manila. He afterwards obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Religious Studies (1978), specializing in Systematic Theology from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. Dr. de Mesa has also done post-doctoral studies at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada. He is presently a staff member and a professor of Systematic Theology at the East Asian Pastoral Institute, an international institute for training pastoral agents of the Christian religious tradition in Asia and the Pacific. He is also the chairperson of its Research Department. Dr. de Mesa serves, too, as a visiting professor of Systematic Theology at the Loyola School of Theology, the Asian Social Institute and St. Andrew's Theological Seminary in the Metro-Manila area. He is a member of the editorial board of the Louvain Theological and Pastoral Monographs based in Leuven, Belgium, and of the Concilium Advisory Board for Liturgy and Sacraments based in Nigmegen, Holland

Earnest Tan: Earnest is a regular lecturer and resource person for the following institutions:  East Asian Pastoral Institute, Asian Social Institute, the Medical Education Unit of the University of the Philippines and Philippine General Hospital, and Miriam Graduate School.  He is affiliated with the Asia Pacific Network for International Education and Values Education (APNIEVE).   He is a graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, A.B. major in Psychology and a Masteral candidate in Education, major in Guidance and Counseling.

History of Mission and Its Implications

Bishop Manny Cabajar, CSsR: Born in Bohol during the  war, he joined the Redemptorist novitiate in 1960, was professed in 1961, and was then sent to Ireland to complete his studies in Cluain Mhuire, Galway. He was ordained in 1966. He was sent to Rome for his licentiate studies after which he volunteered to work in Davao as a missioner. From Davao, he was sent to Madrid to do a doctoral mission while at the same time he taught part-time in St. Francis Xavier Seminary. In 1990, with four confreres, he initiated the way of living the Redemptorist Itinerant Mission Community (RIMC), now recognized as an alternative way of living the Redemptorist life in this country. He became Vicar Provincial in 1996, and elected General Consultor of the Congregation from 1997 to 2003. He was installed fourth bishop of the Diocese of Pagadian on September 2, 2004.

Angel Calvo, CMF: is a Claretian missionary born in Spain who has beenworking in the island of Mindanao,southern Philippines, for more than 30years – mainly with Muslimcommunities. He is the director of PeaceAdvocates Zamboanga for the Dioceseof Zamboanga and founder and leadconvenor of the Inter-Religious SolidarityMovement for Peace.

Dialogue with Religions: Islam

Thomas Michel, SJ: born in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A., in 1941. After studies in philosophy and theology he became  Secretary of Interreligious Dialogue for the Society of Jesus in Rome. In Bangkok, Thailand, he also serves as Secretary for Ecumenism of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences. A Ph.D. in Arabic language and Islamic religion from the University of Chicago, Father Michel teaches regularly in Turkey, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In 1998 he gave the Martin D'Arcy Lectures at Oxford University on Muslim-Christian encounters in history.

Peter Geremia, PIME:
is an Italian-American missionary who has worked in Mindanao since 1967. In 1985 Fr. Peter was targeted for assassination by right-wing vigilantes, who instead killed his friend Fr.Tullio Favali. He is currently based in the Diocese of Kidapawan as overall Coordinator of the Indigenous People programs.


Dialogue with Hinduism & Buddhism

Jeyaraj Rasiah, SJ: is a Jesuit from Sri Lanka. For the past 12 years he has been teaching a variety of subjects in Philosophy and Theology at the Seminaries and Universities in Sri Lanka. His graduate degrees include an M.Ph. (Jnana – Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune, India), S.T.L. in Dogmatic Theology (Pontificia Universita Gregoriana, Rome, Italy) and Ph.D. in Philosophy (University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka). His researches include Bhakti literature, quest for Transcendence in the Indian religious traditions, and the use of images in the self understanding of the Church in Lumen Gentium. He has been involved in the formation of religious in Sri Lanka conducting workshops and retreats and functioned as the Province Coordinator of Formation of the Jesuits. He teaches at EAPI and Loyola School of Theology.
